The Sister Quilt Ritual

This quilt was originally completed as a part of a quilt-a-long event conducted via YouTube in 2020. GEDesigns conducted the sew-a-long via a set of live video recordings and quilters from everywhere (it seemed) stitched along to make their own version of this quilt pattern. Here is a variation that was a part of the new release for the event of one of her quilt patterns - Strip to Shore (available in GEDesigns online store).

This was the first quilt I made that was from a commercial pattern and that used diamonds to make half hexagons to form the blocks here. Another first was using a dark background fabric and brights and low volumes for the focus pieces. This is also the first large lap quilt that I free motion quilted on my sewing machine! Looking back, I loved the experience of making the quilt from start to finish. It was exciting and I loved the final result so much (and had enough fabric left over) to make a second quilt.

When my sister saw a photo of the quilt she was so excited and loved it so much that I knew that I had to finish the second quilt top for her. And so, this was the start of what we have named the sister quilts. From time to time, when I see I design and fabric that I know we will both love, I will make a sister quilts (2 almost matching quilts) for us to have that year. Currently, I am working on our second quilt which is my own design this time, and made from Ruby Star Society fabric bundle. the bright colours and the darker background have remained a part of the developing sister quilt theme and I really hope that the next quilts will be as loved as the originals.

The thing about the sister quilts is that every time I see the quilt, I think of my sister and this is a great thing! I imagine her also thinking of me when she gets to snuggle under her own quilt. Every now and then she will send me a random snap of her legs under the quilt…I love it! This is what quilting is about, connecting people, and sharing— especially with the people you love most.

Well, that’s a wrap from me. Why not make something for someone special, or give someone who has one of your quilts a call and catch up on their news. Tell them you love them or miss them while you get a chance. Most of all…have a great day and Happy Quilting!
