HSTs and Flying Geese: Exploring Classic Quilting Techniques - Part 1

In the world of quilting, there are timeless techniques that form the foundation of countless beautiful designs. Two of these fundamental building blocks are Half Square Triangles (HSTs) and Flying Geese. In this two-part blog post series, we will dive into the magic of these techniques. In Part 1, we will explore Half Square Triangles and discover the versatility and creativity they bring to quilting.

Part 1: Half Square Triangles (HSTs)

Half Square Triangles are geometric units formed by cutting a square in half diagonally, resulting in two triangles. These triangles are then sewn together along the bias edge to form a square. HSTs can be arranged in various ways to create stunning quilt patterns, adding depth and visual interest to your projects.

There are multiple methods for creating HSTs, but one of the most popular techniques involves sewing two contrasting fabric squares together. Here's a step-by-step guide:

  1. Start with two fabric squares that are slightly larger than the desired finished size of your HST.

  2. Place the fabric squares right sides together.

  3. Mark a diagonal line from one corner to the opposite corner on the wrong side of one fabric square. d. Sew a quarter-inch seam on both sides of the marked line.

  4. Cut along the marked line to separate the squares into two triangles.

  5. Press the seam allowances to one side or open, depending on your preference. g. Trim the HSTs to their precise measurements, ensuring accuracy for seamless piecing.

HSTs offer endless design possibilities, making them a beloved technique among quilters. By rotating, arranging, and combining HSTs, you can create intricate patterns such as chevrons, pinwheels, stars, and more. Let your imagination soar as you experiment with color, scale, and layout to bring your unique vision to life.
