For this quilt the blocks are made by creating arc sections (orange peels) consisting of 8 pieces and 2 end squares. These are then set into a centre curved square (one arc on each side) to form a circle (representing a wedding ring). The moniker ‘double’ is relevant because the individual rings appear to overlap with each orange peel section becoming a part of 2 separate wedding rings. Phew! It is a bit exhausting to explain…You can see how the individual orange peel units look from the images in the gallery showing my test blocks that ended up in the back of this quilt.
For the blocks I used every scrap of fabric left over from at least 3 quilts (two sister quilts, more in the weeks ahead). These were all very small pieces so were perfect for cutting into the small template required for the patchwork orange peel segments.
In terms of modern quilting, Victoria Findlay Wolfe has become quite well known for her reinterpretations of this classic vintage block. You can check out some of her amazing quilts on Instagram.
That a wrap from me, I will update the gallery as always. I find it a little ironic that, as a single gal, I made this quilt especially for myself and find that I may not be able to part with it!
Have a great day, why not try to make a very traditional or vintage block and see how you can spice it up a bit with your own fabric choices. And, most of all — happy quilting!
